Many readers ask me how I come up with topics to
write
about week after week. My answer is it’s easy.
I write things down. And not only ideas for
topics for
newsletters, but ideas about anything for business or
for me personally.
It wasn’t always easy, though.
Writing may
come easily and naturally for some people; I had to
make it easier by doing it the old fashioned way-
practice and habit.
You know,
practice like learning to post to a trot, learning to
identify leads and how to longe a horse. A
few people , darn them, just know it.
Then there are the rest of us, the many, who
practice until we learn it; then it feels natural
out of habit.
Writing can be a low cost tool with high
value results in your horse business. No,
I’m not suggesting you write a book, well..not at first.
What I am suggesting is for you to start a habit of
writing things down about your business life and
personal life. Not something like a teenager's diary,
but thoughts, ideas and directions you have about
your professional and personal life.
There are estimates that a person can have
thoughts
per day ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 in number
.
Wow! I’m thinking that’s a lot of thinking.
Most of the thousands of thoughts are the same
you had, yesterday, last week and last year. A
part of the human brain is addicted to reruns
and often
they’re bad re-runs. No need to take note of negative
thoughts; they always reappear until you choose to
release them.
But, I’m talking about writing down the good
thoughts
you have, the original ideas or twists on a theme.
They are brilliant and sadly, often short lived. If they
aren’t captured in writing, they vanish and may take
months or years to reappear.
Ideas like:
- An open house at back to school time to
promote your lesson program
- Organizing a training demonstration on
how to load a horse in a trailer
- Sunday morning brunch followed by a trail ride
- Your own five page book for non
horseman parents on what to expect at a horse
show
- Hiring a part time bookkeeper as an
experiment
- Enrolling in a night course in business
marketing
- Specializing in a specific riding discipline
- Joining Toastmasters to improve you
public speaking skill
Capturing and recording your thoughts is the very first
step in turning a thought into a thing. While
processing your tens of thousands of thoughts today,
start a moneymaking habit by writing down the
positive ideas. Start “write” now. Make a note to
make
some notes.
